NEW Malaysian PM Orders Police Not To Arrest Man Who Insulted Him, Islam
PRISON Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said today he disagrees with the authorities on arresting a man who allegedly insulted him and Islam excessively on Facebook.
In a Twitter posting, Dr Mahathir said that he did not agree with the method used to address those who criticised him.
It was reported yesterday that the Langkawi police had arrested a man for making insulting comments about Dr Mahathir and Islam.
The arrest was carried out following several reports by numerous NGOs who were displeased with the man’s Facebook post.
“I don’t agree with the action taken against those who criticise me,” Dr Mahathir said.
“I have informed the relevant police party of this.”
He also stressed that amendments to laws will be implemented during the next session of Parliament.
This sentiment was echoed by Muar MP Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman on Twitter, who said Dr Mahathir has assured him that the PM’s critics would be protected.
“Met up with the Prime Minister and he gave assurance that his critics will be protected and not suppressed,” he said.
