A Lagos Sexual Offences Court sitting in Ikeja on Monday sentenced a 48-year-old man, Adelaja Olaide to a 60-year jail term for defiling a 7-year-old girl.
In his pronouncement of the ruling on Adelaja , the presiding judge, Justice Sybil Nwaka described him as an animal without conscience.
“The defendant was charged with a sexual offence of defilement and he has been convicted accordingly.
“The evidence proved against him by the prosecution are overwhelming and he is not fit to walk freely in the society,” he stated.
Justice Nwaka further described the convict as a predator, walking around and looking for little girls to devour.
“With people like you roaming on the streets, our children are no longer safe and this judgment will send a signal to paedophiles like you.
“To defile a child means to dishonour, to demoralize and to injure that person because you have created a wound that can never be healed within that person.
“I am satisfied that the prosecution has diligently done his case and I so convict the defendant.
“I hereby sentenced you, Adelaja Olaide to 60 years imprisonment without an option of fine,” she said.
The prosecution had earlier told the court that the defendant committed the offence at No. 17, Otun Oluwo Street, Ikotun Lagos.
According to the prosecuting counsel, Mr. Babajide Boye, the convict defiled one Adijat, 7 years by having sexual intercourse with her.
“The defendant was exposed by his daughter who reported the act he committed with the victim to her mother.
“The defendant’s daughter, Oriyomi, has gone to meet the victims’ mother to report to her that her father sent her to call the victim and thereafter had sex with her.
The matter was reported at Olosan Police station and the convict, Adelaja was subsequently arrested.
Both the defendant and the victim gave a voluntary statement to the police while the victim was referred to Ketu General Hospital for a medical checkup.
Adelaja, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
During the trial, a medical doctor, Mr. Yekini Muyideen who also testified before the court disclosed that his findings revealed that there was a broken hymen and a pool of sperm was found on the victim.
“While giving evidence, the survivor also identified the defendant as “Ijebu” as he is being called told the court that the accused person sent her daughter to call her and thereafter removed her pants and had sex with her.
In her allocutus, counsel to the defendant urged the court to tamper justice with mercy.
“My lord, the defendant is a first-time offender and he has been incarcerated since 2016. He is a family man and as a result of his remand, his family has suffered greatly.
“I urge your lordship to have mercy on him because he has turned a new leaf and has realized the gravity of his offence.
The prosecuting counsel, Mr Boye, however, urged the court to allow justice to prevail.
“The defendant has been found guilty and we prayed your lordship to pass down the judgment as required.
Boye said the judgment will serve as a warning to perpetrators in the state.
“We also use this opportunity to encourage victims who have been abused to speak out without being afraid.
“The state of Lagos will always stand by you and fight for you. Lagos state is committed to a society that is free and safe for all,” he said.
